Members of Girl Scout Troop #31293,  Kassidy York and Samantha Buchy, assist with the downtown plantings. This is their fourth year participating in the Adopt A Box program.

On May 19, nearly 100 people from businesses, organizations and families came to beautify downtown.  With the early morning start, volunteers from BASF and Boy Scout Troop #373 assisted with the unloading and spreading of mulch and planting Annie Oakley Park. From 8:00am until 11:00am on Saturday morning people gathered in the downtown to plant their adopted box organized by the Main Street Greenville’s Design Committee.

If you are in downtown this summer, check out the colorful additions to the downtown along with the rows of street poles recognizing the Adopt-A-Box participants.  Children, parents, grandparents, co-workers, and friends all took part in the planting of the vibrant colors along South Broadway. “This program was designed to reach out and involve the community and to have an appreciation for downtown Greenville,” stated Mike Henderson, Main Street Greenville Design Chair.  Throughout the summer the participants will be maintaining their box or pot while helpful hands of more community volunteers water them.

This year’s program recognizes BASF, Miller Flowers, Spencer’s Landscaping, Fresh Air Farms, Wayne Industries and City of Greenville Street Department for contributing time, materials and or monetary donation towards this community project.

A circa 1900 snapshoot of 334 S. Broadway at the corner of W. Third & Broadway.  This building and three others will be on the Upper Floor Tour on Friday, May 4 during ‘First Fridays’

334 and 402 are more than a number and much more than an address on South Broadway.  Since the mid 1800's, each of these buildings housed the entrepreneurial spirit and business ventures of pharmacists, bakers, dentists, confectioners, restaurateurs, harness makers, grocers, home furnishings, paint, clothing and shoe store owners.

402 S. Broadway, formerly Bill Rogers California Beds and Bedroom Store, is a wonderful, late 1800 high Victorian Gothic Brick and Block Structure.  328, 330 and 334, Bach to Rock since 1999, was built between 1850 and 1854 and boasts a 6-bay stucco facade.  The "upper floors" of the 334 building were home to the Fraternal Order of the Moose from 1924 to the 1960's and today, can still be seen with the large lodge room complete with stage.

Give yourself the rare opportunity to view these and more "hidden gems" of  Greenville’s downtown on Friday, May 4 from 6-9p.m.  Meet with the owners of these historic buildings and hear them share their vision for business and downtown living options.   This amazing tour will include 2 other "upper floor" locations and 2 bonus locations in downtown!  Tickets for this tour are $5 each and are available at Granny's Corner and Bread of Life.  Tickets can also be purchased at the door of any of the four stops during the evening event.  Also, since it is "First Fridays" downtown businesses will be open late!

Mote and Associates, sponsor the Third Annual Upper Floor Building tour, is a professional design firm specializing in civil engineering and land surveying.  The tour is presented by Main Street Greenville in collaboration with Historic Preservation Month to bring awareness and respect to our built environment and to ‘Discover our Hidden Gems.’

"First Fridays" is a monthly event presented by Main Street Greenville-a non-profit organization committed to stimulating and supporting revitalization efforts, historic preservation and economic growth in historic Downtown Greenville.  To learn more about the other buildings on the tour, click here.

Downtown Greenville Farmers' Market

Do you raise vegetables?  Make crafts? Maybe you grow fresh flowers or bake. Have you considered vending at the Downtown Greenville Farmers’ Market? The market will be opening on Saturday, June 2 and vendors are wanted!

As in the past, market days will be on Saturday mornings on the Courthouse lawn from 9am-1pm.  The market season runs to October 13.

Vendors can choose from many options that work best for their product availability. A popular option at the market is the  ‘Communal Table’. For those who have little or no time to sell at the market, drop off your produce, a volunteer will tend to the communal table.  This allows you to sell your extra produce and make money.  We have a designated market master to man the table the whole season.

Sponsored by Wayne Healthcare, The Andersons and KitchenAid Experience, this is the 14th year for the Downtown Greenville Farmers Market. Products must be produced in Ohio or neighboring Indiana counties. View application with further details or contact Main Street Greenville at 548-4998.

Planting Day 2011 brought over
100 volunteers downtown!
As the winter weather is eliminated from the forecast for the next several months, the signs of spring itch to come back to life.  The cool, crisp air with the sun peeking through ignites a planting spirit in many of us.  That spirit is also coming alive in downtown Greenville!

The Main Street Greenville Design Committee is organizing its 6th annual Adopt A Box Program sponsored by BASF to encourage  citizens to plant pride in downtown and within the Greenville community at large. The beauty of downtown reaches far more than its boundaries with assistance from area businesses, organizations, and families, Greenville becomes an attractive destination and community we can all be proud to live, work and do business in.

On May 19, a day Main Street Greenville calls Downtown Beautification Day, the district will come alive with people bustling around planting color into the earth.  The adoptee of each flower box and pot will engage in volunteering his or her time to keep downtown growing.  Last year over 100 volunteers participated in the morning program.

The vision of this program is to see families laughing, co-workers communicating, and organizations building teamwork. Downtown is a place for people to come together, socialize, and feel connected with the rest of the community. What better way to allow that to happen then a beautification day?  This day will be a small movement towards people picking up the shovel, moving the dirt, and planting the seeds for the future.

If this is something that excites you, please give Amber at Main Street Greenville a call at 548.4998 to adopt a downtown box or pot or fill out the Participation Form. Hurry a limited number of boxes and pots are available.

Historic photograph of 529 S. Broadway. This building will be featured on the Upper Floor Tour presented by Main Street Greenville on Friday, May 4 from 6-9 pm.

Have you ever dreamed of living in the midst of an historic, eclectic environment? Are you thinking that your business would benefit from a vibrant location where you will be a valued member of a supportive, committed business group? Or, are you just plain curious about your downtown and wonder where the blacksmith set-up his shop in the 1800's and where the funeral home was located on Broadway in the 1900's?

Then you will want to be part of the May 4, First Friday Upper Floor Tour to see and discover our "hidden gems". 600 South Broadway (American Title Resource) and 529 South Broadway (Youniques) are part of this interesting downtown event. Building owners will be on hand to share the rich history of these National Historic buildings and inform of their vision for the space. This amazing tour will include 2 other "upper floor" locations and 2 bonus locations in downtown! Tickets for this tour are $5 each and are available at Granny's Corner and Bread of Life. Tickets can also be purchased at the door of any of the four stops for this evening’s event. Also, since it is "First Friday" downtown businesses will be open late!

Dustin Nealeigh stating that St. Clair Memorial Hall is a place that matters.

While it takes a village to raise a child, it takes a community partnering together to keep a historic treasure alive, such as Darke County’s historic Henry St. Clair Memorial Hall, located in downtown Greenville.

Memorial Hall, which celebrates its 100th anniversary in May, was awarded a $250,000 grant for façade repairs and exterior restoration by the Ohio Department of Development. This funding was secured through the collaboration of the City of Greenville, Greenville City Schools, Darke County Endowment for the Arts and Main Street Greenville. The matching funds were provided through permanent improvement funds of Greenville City Schools, who owns the building, and by Darke County Endowment for the Arts.

The City of Greenville applied to the Ohio Department of Development for a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Discretionary Program Tier 3 on behalf of Greenville City Schools with assistance from Mote and Associates and Susan Schepis, Grants Specialist.

“We are thrilled to have so many different groups working together to secure funding and help restore Memorial Hall,” said Jon McGreevey, Director of Administrative Services for Greenville City Schools. “This funding will ensure Memorial Hall remains a treasure in Darke County.”

The $250,000 matching grant will preserve multiple aspects of Memorial Hall. Renovations include restoration and repairs of the front façade and reinforcing the façade structure by repointing mortar joints and repairing deteriorating cast stone. Structural improvements will be completed in the attic and damage caused by excessive moisture in the building over the past 100 years will be addressed.

With cooperative weather, officials anticipate construction will commence in May and the major parts of the renovation will be completed before school starts in late August.

A Centennial Celebration for Memorial Hall organized by the Darke County Center for the Arts (DCCA) and local citizens will be held May 4-6, 2012. Building tours will be offered on Friday evening May 4, and musical selections, which were performed at Memorial Hall’s dedication on May 3, 1912, will be featured.

A building used for educational and cultural purposes was the dream of Henry St. Clair, a man who moved to Greenville in 1872 and opened Darke County’s most successful wholesale grocery business. St. Clair served the community as a member of Greenville’s school board and as a city councilman. He and his wife Ella Van Dyke St. Clair contributed generously to local community needs. St. Clair’s final gift to Darke County was leaving $100,000 in his will to the Greenville Board of Education to build Memorial Hall. Construction on the building began in June 1910 and was completed in 1912. The project cost $135,000 in its entirety, and St. Clair’s wife, Ella, paid the remainder.

For more information about the Centennial Celebration, contact DCCA at 547-0908 or visit their website at www.centerforarts.net.
