A blindfold, good food, and great company are what we paired for tonight's event of Dining in the Darke.  It will be interesting to hear the reactions and comments from the participants on how their other senses took over after being in the "darke."

In darkness everyone becomes equal.  Our opinions can't be molded by dress, mannerisms or makeup as none of it can be seen.  You learn that without sight your other senses become more acute.  It gives sighted people an opportunity to test their dexterity, use their other senses and to enjoy the flavors, smells and textures of their supper.

Dining in the Darke is a new fundraising effort for Main Street Greenville.  Pair dinner and conversation with curiosity add in downtown and after dinner dialog to make for a great evening of experiencing something never experienced in the Darke.

We would love to hear your comments from the evening.

  1. It was an amazing adventure!! The abscence of vision kicked my other senses into overdrive. I literally overthought everything I tasted! The waitstaff was wonderful, the food was great and although the acoustics in the room squashed any attempt at a conversation with my friends, all in all this was a very funfilled evening! Nice to see a little cultured activity in small town Ohio. My big city friends will be envious!!

  2. I really enjoyed my Dining in the Darke experience. At first, I was a little nervous, not knowing what to expect -- and always being able to see my food before! But, I was pleasantly surprised...the food definitely was delicous - and it was a lot of fun not knowing what was coming next! Great job!! And thanks for the opportunity to be able to dine in the Darke! Kim M.

  4. What a crazy experience! I have to admit I was a little nervous at first, but once I had a glass of wine I relaxed a bit. :) Being blindfolded in the back room of a local restaurant is a pretty unusual thing! Once the blindfold was on, I had absolutely no concept of who or what was around me. Thank goodness there were friendly Main Street volunteers to guide our way. It did seem like everyone's senses other than sight were heightened immediately. People started talking much louder and grabbing for other people around them. I found myself reaching for my husband who also grabbed my hand, but then they took him away from me! Not to fear, though. I had a nice person walk me to my chair and help me sit down. The food was an interesting experience as well. Trying to find salad on a plate is challenging when you can't even find your fork next to it! Once I did find the salad, I was pleasantly surprised. It was pasta with fruit! My first bite was pineapple, then I discovered a grape, cheese-filled tortellini and a strawberry. Quite interesting. Next was the main course. I wasn't sure what it was, but it was some kind of grilled meat. I thought chicken, but now know it was pork. Plus the potatoes were great. Anything with cheese on it works for me. And the dessert? Some kind of lemony concoction. Whatever it was, the food was delicious. There was even live music to boot. Fun! Fun! Lots of crazy blindfolded people, all there to support Main Street Greenville and have a good time. It was a success!

  5. I had a wonderful time at dining in the darke. The food was delicious and nobody saw me eat with my hands. I would recommend this experience and I'm looking forward to the next one even though my wife spilled her water on my pants and my underwear are soaking wet. Thanks Amber
