February is such a great time to celebrate love. We at Main Street Greenville are toasting with you-with help from our sponsors Romer's Catering, St. Clair Manor and Daily Advocate, we are bringing a Wedding Walk to February's First Friday!

When we counted up how many downtown businesses offer a service or product for the wedding industry we were giddy to find out over 40 businesses cater to these beautiful occasions. The Wedding Walk will highlight most of these businesses as you get a chance to tour them and check out their creations, talent, and customer service.

As the First Fridays theme in February we feel it is a great time to introduce brides, grooms, attendants and parents to downtown at a relaxed pace and setting.

On Saturday, November 19 at 7:00 pm Wayne Industries/Darke County Board of Developmental Disabilities will grand marshal the Hometown Holiday Horse Parade into downtown Greenville. The selection of the group came very easily as approximately 20 individuals from Wayne Industries along with supervisor Mark Middlecoff logged 2,400 volunteer hours for Main Street Greenville in just 6 months! Each Thursday from mid April to mid October the group, wearing their matching blue t-shirts, tended to flower beds, mulch, weed removal and trash pick up in downtown. “We feel their effort is something worth celebrating. These individuals were dedicated to their work and really contributed to beautifying downtown this summer,” stated Amber Schmerge, Main Street Greenville Executive Director.

Wayne Industries/Darke County Board of Developmental Disabilities focus is to provide services to individuals that enable them to live, work and play as productive and contributing members of the community. In addition to vocational training/opportunities, individuals have an array of services to choose from as they pertain to community volunteering, social and leisure activities and community participation. Their time spent in downtown Greenville reflects true leaders in shaping our downtown’s sense of place, stories and future. It’s because of their efforts that Greenville can proudly reflect a downtown that matters.

The 8th annual parade, sponsored by Wayne Healthcare and Greenville Federal, is presented by Main Street Greenville. Each year Main Street Greenville provides programs which make our community and downtown district a better place to live, work , shop and enjoy for ourselves, families and friends. The Hometown Holiday Horse Parade is a huge part of community pride and reflects the quality of life provided in Greenville with an estimated 8, 000 people attending each year. With nearly 55 lighted hitches and riders making up the parade, it is a true festive celebration of the holiday season in Darke County. Ending the Season with Celebration

This Saturday closes the season for the Downtown Greenville Farmers’ Market. The market, located at 4^th and Broadway, has been open every Saturday from 9:00 am-1:00 pm since June. On October 29, the market will conclude with a special celebration for long time vendor and market staple, Francis Byers, who turns 90 years old this December.

Mr. Byers has been vending at the downtown market since it opened in 1998 at O’Brien’s Mill. He has stayed with the market through several location changes to its current site at the Courthouse. Before coming to downtown, Francis began his market career of selling his 1^st place produce at the Richmond, IN market. A long time affair with the soil, Francis has been gardening since he was 18 years old. Making a career out of his passion, he has competed at the state and county fair with grain, fruit and vegetables. In fact, this year marked 72 consecutive years at the Darke County Fair!

Today, Francis tends to two acres of garden, 120 apple trees, and numerous cherry and peach trees.

The Downtown Greenville Farmers’ Market family invites friends, family and market goers to join them in celebrating Francis’s milestone at 12:00 pm on Saturday, October 29 at the Courthouse. The market family is planning cake, card signing and well wishes for Francis.

Readmore’s Hallmark along with Downtown Greenville merchants invite you to the “Downtown Greenville Chocolate Walk” in Greenville’s historic downtown district on Friday evening, November 18 from 6:00-9:00 pm. Twenty-five downtown businesses will provide chocolate treats on the Chocolate Walk route creating a great sense of place.

Tickets, $5, are available now at Readmore’s Hallmark, 524 S. Broadway. Only 150 tickets will be sold for this sweet event coinciding with downtown’s Holiday Open House. The self-guided Chocolate Walk will start at Readmore’s Hallmark where ticket holders will get the list of participating businesses and event tote bag for their goodies. Some treats you’ll enjoy on the spot, others you’ll be able to take home to savor later.

During the evening, free Horse Drawn Wagon Rides will be offered courtesy of Second National Bank from 6:00-9:00 pm to ring in the holiday season in Greenville.

Beggars' Night & Halloween Parade

Beggars' Night & the Lion's Club Parade each year. They are one of many downtown businesses that provide a treat stop for the kids in the Greenville community.

On Thursday, October 27, immediately following the annual 7 pm Lion’s Club Parade, downtown Greenville will be transformed into a Halloween fun night for elementary school aged children. The Lion’s Club and Main Street Greenville are pleased to bring this safe Halloween event to the community.

The parade will form on the100 block of West Fifth Street at 6:30 pm and will proceed down Broadway to the city building ,where judging will take place and prizes will be awarded. Seven prize categories will consist of Tiny Tot Girls (up to age 6), Tiny Tot Boys (up to age 6), Masked girls (ages 6-10) Masked boys (ages 6-10), Masked girl (ages 11-16), Masked boys (ages 11-16), Best costumed adult, and Best Masked Group.

In conjunction with the parade and Beggars’ Night, the groups are asking for unwanted eye glasses and hearing aids. Donations of these items will be accepted now through Oct. 28 at the following downtown businesses: Studio 1 Hair Designs, Sweet One O One, KitchenAid Experience, Beltone Hearing and Advanced Eye Care. Just look for the drop box at each of their locations. “The Lion’s Club mission is wanting everyone to see a better tomorrow. That's why we support sight programs and services including vision screenings, eye banks and eyeglass recycling. We provide eye care services to those at risk of losing their sight and raise donations through campaigns like SightFirst and Campaign SightFirst II,” commented Lion’s Club president Nancy McClurg. Countdown to Downtown Buckeye Bash

Main Street Greenville and Darke County OSU Alumni are pleased to announce the return of the Downtown Buckeye Bash on Saturday, October 8 from 6:00-11:00 pm. This very special downtown event takes place behind the Palace Building on East Fifth Street under a scarlet and gray big top!

This second annual event is geared for the OSU and Greenville fan alike. Activities and fun for all ages are being planned. Entry to the event is on East Fifth Street. Upon entering you can purchase tickets at 50¢ a piece that will be used for purchasing food and drinks at the event.

Kids activities are scheduled from 6:00-9:00 pm, Chili Cook-Off of downtown restaurants begins at 7:00 pm until Half Time of the OSU vs. Nebraska football game, which will be presented on numerous big screen televisions at the event. Individuals and families can show their Buckeye spirit in the Best Dressed Buckeye Contest during Half Time.

The Downtown Buckeye Bash highlights five of our downtown businesses with the Taste of Downtown from 6:00-11:00 pm. Event goers can sample from an array of food offerings from these businesses then head over the beer tent to quench their thirst. “The Downtown Buckeye Bash was established to bring people downtown for a fun safe family friendly event. The partnership between Main Street Greenville and Darke County OSU Alumni is a natural fit for presenting this event to the community. All proceeds raised by the bash support both organizations’ programs,” states event chair, Brian Griesdorn.

Another attraction to the event includes a Reverse Raffle. Tickets are on sale now for $5 with a chance to win $500. Only 200 tickets are being sold for this raffle whose winner is the last ticket drawn. The drawing begins at 6:30 pm and will last until the end of the event. Sweet Stories Savored on Courthouse Lawn

Main Street Greenville is pleased announce a very special downtown event geared for families with young children (Young Households) called Savoring Our Sweet Stories - A Story Time on the Courthouse Lawn, on Saturday, September 24 from 11:00am - 11:45am during downtown Greenville's Days of Harvest celebration event.

Savoring Our Sweet Stories is the first of four upcoming events planned by Main Street Greenville in promotion of their downtownmatters! initiative. "We wanted to offer a specific event downtown just for the community's families with young children. Eating sugar cookies and participating in a special storytime on our beautiful courthouse lawn.....what child and parent wouldn't love that!" stated Amber Schmerge, Director for Main Street Greenville. "We're so thrilled and very grateful the Greenville Public Library and Janet's Bakery have agreed to help host and offer the event with us."

Families can expect to be welcomed by Main Street Greenville volunteers handing out sweet treats while guiding them to comfy blankets spread along the lawn. Julie Frohna, Children's Specialist with the Greenville Public Library will share stories and sing-a-longs of sweet adventures pertaining to fall harvest. Main Street Greenville has announced a new annual giving campaign initiative called downtownmatters! Our Story. Our Place. Our Future. The downtownmatters! Initiative will kick-off Labor Day weekend at the downtown district’s First Friday and Farmers’ Market events, Friday-September 2^nd and Saturday-September 3^rd respectively.

According to Amber Schmerge, Executive Director of Main Street Greenville, the events were the prime venues for launching the drive. “Labor Day weekend traditionally carries a mind-set of closing out the summer months, its back to school and thoughts move toward fall and winter holiday planning. They turn their attention back home, with local experiences and community needs given a higher priority and focus. Incorporating the launch into First Friday and Farmers’ Market activities -two very active social venues - became the idea time. We're pumped!"

The downtownmatters! Initiative is Main Street Greenville’s sole funding drive and volunteerism solicitation vehicle for the organization. The annual drive consists of four Mini-Campaigns scheduled throughout the upcoming year, in coordination with existing downtown events hosted in partnership with various downtown and community based business supporters. Each mini-campaign carries a different theme to coincide with its specific downtown event and donor incentive.

FIRST FRIDAYS CRUISE INTO JULY

First Fridays started last month on Friday, June 3. Many families, friends and couples enjoyed the evening, as over 25 downtown businesses were open late.

The first Fridays of June, July and August have taken on a new meaning in downtown Greenville! ‘First Fridays’ aims to bring people downtown during evening hours to enjoyactivities, demonstrations, food and music in a beautiful historic setting. Local downtown businesses will stay open until 9:00 pm.

The second ‘First Friday’ of the summer season is scheduled for July 1^st and will include an old time favorite to Greenville; Cruising. The evening will end at dusk with ‘Flicks on 5^th,’ featuring the original 2006 film “Cars,” a movie about Lightning McQueen, the famous racecar who finds friendship and love in the local residents of a small town. The two story inflatable movie screen will be located on East Fifth Street between Broadway and Walnut. Lawn chairs and blankets are encouraged for this free family friendly event.

“Main Street Greenville works closely with downtown businesses in an effort to create cultural experiences in small town Greenville, Ohio. Events like ‘First Fridays’ remind local residents of the resources and talent available in our downtown,” states Amber Schmerge, director of Main Street Greenville. “The purpose of ‘First Fridays’ is to get us excited about our community. During tough economic times, it’s easy to forget that there is much to offer right here in our own backyard. We need to be taking advantage of it,” she concluded.

First Fridays Commercial

First Fridays is new to Greenville, Ohio. What is First Fridays? It is an event on the first Friday of the summer months to promote a social setting for the community. Businesses are open late (store until 9pm, some restaurants later) and offering demonstrations, promotions and music.

Flicks on 5th, an outdoor movie series, is also during First Fridays. The flicks will begin at dusk (approx. 8:45 pm) on East Fifth Street where a 2 story inflatable screen will be erected for a free movie showing. First Fridays has picked up momentum in downtown across the country. We are excited to bring it to Downtown Greenville, Ohio. Downtown is the place to be on First Fridays!

May is National Preservation Month. Sponsored by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the theme this year is “Celebrating America’s Treasures.”

Come To Your Senses with “Dining in the Darke”

Greenville, OH - Main Street Greenville is happy to announce its fourth annual “Dining in the Darke” event to be held on Saturday, April 2, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. The event will be a unique expedition into a world of sensuous flavors, smells, and texture using fresh local food from Darke County.

Arriving to a warm welcome and a few words of orientation, guests will be given a uniquely constructed blindfold called a “Mindfold”. Once everyone is immersed in total “darkeness”, guests are gently guided into the dining room where a decadent, three-course meal will be served.

Without vision, information from other senses becomes more noticeable and conversation becomes more intimate. Guests will discover the mysteries of the menu – designed by The Bistro’s chef Lisa Voisard – by using their senses of smell, taste, and touch. To ensure that participants enjoy the full experience, the menu will not be revealed until the evening’s close.

“This year we bring local Darke County foods to the palette to really make flavors and freshness apparent. We encourage participants to explore our downtown while in our community, so we have created an itinerary of sorts of our favorite spots and stops in and around downtown to make for a great afternoon excursion,” stated Becky Dynes, Main Street Greenville volunteer and event coordinator.

With one week left until Christmas, make sure your child gets to visit with Santa. On Saturday, December 18, Sunday, December 19 and Monday, December 20 Santa will be in downtown Greenville at Sweet One O One in The Palace Bulidng at the corner of Fifth Street and S. Broadway.

On these days children are encouraged to bring their wish list for Santa. He will be available from 2-5pm on Saturday & Sunday and 3-8pm on Monday.

Mike Henderson named Grand Marshal of Horse Parade

As the Hometown Holiday Horse Parade committee gathered to discuss this year’s Grand Marshal it was a natural to choose Mike Henderson. Like most Darke County natives, Henderson has fond memories of downtown Greenville. He remembers it being the weekend shopping destination.

While the downtown has changed since his childhood, he realizes how important downtown design and appearance can be for a downtown’s viability. For over two decades Henderson has assisted in downtown revitalization whether it be through his profession as design manager for Mote & Associates or volunteering with Main Street Greenville, a non-profit organization committed to stimulate and support revitalization efforts, historic preservation and economic growth in historic downtown Greenville.

For the past five years, Henderson has chaired the design committee of the Main Street program. “He’s been doing a fantastic job at it,” said Amber Schmerge, executive director of Main Street Greenville. “He’s always been willing to give time expertise and passion to the downtown.” Under his leadership the committee has succeeded in executing quality projects to enhance the downtown area. The Adopt A Box Program, wayfinding signage, new seasonal banners, creating awareness of our historic buildings through an Upper Floor Tour are a few to add to Henderson’s accomplishments. “He has been a great leader and role model for citizens in this community. “He not only verbally supports our downtown efforts, he rolls his sleeves up and helps accomplish projects. You can’t ask for a better volunteer,” states Schmerge. As Henderson celebrates thirty years at Mote & Associates, a civil engineering firm on West Fourth Street, the parade committee and Main Street Greenville recognize his stewardship to his community.

Henderson will be leading the parade in a vis a vis carriage on Saturday, November 20 at 7 pm in downtown Greenville. Main Street Greenville presents this 7^th annual event to the community with support from Wayne HealthCare and Greenville Federal.

Downtown Churches Put Best Pew Forward for Holiday Open House

Five of the churches in the downtown Greenville area will open their doors to the public for “A Candlelight Stroll” on Thursday, November 18 in conjunction with downtown Greenville’s Holiday Open House.

“This joint effort by the churches allows the community to learn what services and activities are available for the holiday season, view the architectural details of each church and understanding the religious heritage that makes up Greenville’s faith community,” commented Amber Schmerge, director of Main Street Greenville.

This free Thursday evening candlelight tour will be open to the public from 5-8 pm. Dave Knapp Ford and Main Street Greenville along with the participating churches are offering free carriage rides around downtown Greenville directing people to the churches.

This is an evening in which the entire family can enjoy a holiday experience together, embrace evening shopping and enjoy a good meal from one of the downtown restaurants without leaving our community.

Participating churches include Christian Missionary Alliance Church, First Presbyterian Church, St. Paul Episcopal Church, St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, and St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

Downtown Banners receive help from Greenville Schools

Mrs. Cleary’s Senior Career Art class displays the four fall banner designs. Stephanie Schieltz, Brooke Sturgell, Chelsi Brown, and Jessica Bowers created the chosen artwork.

Beginning in the spring of 2009, Main Street Greenville started a Banner Replacement Program. This program allows for a new seasonal banner each year to grace the light poles along Broadway. While last year the generic spring banners were substituted for creative and abstract artwork designed by the Greenville’s 8^th grade art class, this year brings change to the worn fall banners. Enlisting the talents of the Greenville Senior High Career Art Class was a genius idea from the Main Street Greenville Design Committee and Superintendent Susie Riegle.

Senior Career Art teacher, Mrs. Cleary, engaged her sixteen-student class in this project at the beginning of the school year. Within two weeks the students critiqued their work and four designs were picked. With the help of local printing company, Express It, the 56 banners were completed just in time to fly in the cool crisp air fall affords. So when traveling through downtown Greenville on your way to school, work, or shopping trip take a look at what welcomes you into the community and evokes pride. Not only do they shout "FALL" they also exude creativity.

“Using our local resources, and at the same time encouraging and cultivating these young artists was a goal for the committee,” states Amber Schmerge, director of Main Street Greenville. “We are very pleased with the results and extend an invitation to the community to help fund this project.” The Fall Banners have received partial funding from Darke Rural Electric Cooperative and Brethren Retirement Community. The committee is accepting donations as reasonable as $40 from individuals and businesses. Yesterday we took out all the flowers in the flower boxes downtown. We know they still looked great, but soon the frost will come and the flowers will be turning.

The weather was great and the volunteers come out to help. All clean up was finished in an hour!

Thanks again to this year's adopt a box participants and the volunteer watering crews: Lelah Shoop, Christie Randall, Tom and Jackie Soper, Mike Henderson, Holly Finnarn, Austin Spencer, Brian Griesdorn, Amber Schmerge, City of Greenville Street Department, Gina and Alyssa Miller, Lauren and Chad Henry, Donna Gasper, Susie Riegle and Jon McGreevey. These volunteers each watered once a month to ensure the flowers stayed as beautiful as the day they were planted.

The streets of downtown Greenville will be full of ghostly characters and haunted tales on Thursday, October 28 for the Lion’s Club Halloween Parade and Beggars’ Night on Broadway. This Halloween tradition begins at 7pm with the parade of dressed up children, teenagers and adults.

The Greenville’s Lion’s Club has organized the Halloween parade for forty years. This event promotes a safe, family fun night on Broadway. The parade route begins at West Fifth Street to Broadway north to the City Municipal Building where judging will take place and prizes awarded.

If interested in being part of the parade, it is as easy as lining up at West Fifth Street at 6:30pm on October 28. The parade has categories for Tiny Tots Girls ages 0-6, Tiny Tots Boys ages 0-6, Masked Girls ages 6-10, Masked Boys ages 6-10, Masked Girls and Boys ages 11-16, Best Adult Costumed and Best Masked Group. Bring out the creativity and have fun at this festive night out.

Motor units are welcomed in the parade as well. Please contact Nancy McClurg at 670-0301 to enter your unit. As always, no political campaign signs will be permitted.

Beggar’s Night, presented by Main Street Greenville, is a fun, safe event for children ages 4-12 to celebrate Halloween. Downtown businesses line up on the sidewalk along Broadway after the Halloween Parade to hand little beggars’ treats of all kinds. In addition to begging for candy, a haunted house, activity stations and a luminary display of pumpkins at the circle are all set for the event.

Heritage Ohio, a statewide preservation and revitalization non-profit organization, is pleased to announce Main Street Greenville as a participant in the Retail is Detail technical assistance program.

Heritage Ohio is the recipient of a $99,000 USDA: Rural Business Enterprise Grant. The grant will be used to bring the Retail is Detail program to Cambridge, Defiance, Greenville, Norwalk, Port Clinton, Portsmouth, Van Wert and Wilmington. Participating businesses in downtown Greenville include: Sweet One O One, Michael’s Fine Clocks & Jewelry, Granny’s Corner, Pamela’s Apparel and Montage Café.

Deb Miller of Blue Pencil and Chris Boring of Boulevard Strategies are partnering with Heritage Ohio to bring their retail expertise to downtown businesses located in eight Main Street communities. Miller and Boring will work hand and hand with five businesses owners within the Main Street Program boundaries providing technical assistance. They will be addressing business issues including marketing, window displays, floor layout, e-commerce, operations, façade and signage, parking landscaping, merchandising, inventory, lighting, pricing, and customer service.

The 2010 Downtown Chili Cook Off Winner is Danny's Place! Kevin Saintignon, owner of Danny's Place, was excited to receive the honor and the traveling trophy again. Four years ago, Danny's Place won the title to only give it up the next three years. Well, the trophy is back on the bar mantel where it will stay for at least a year.

Last year's winner, The Bistro Off Broadway's expectations of bringing the trophy home again were unfulfilled with their spicy chili. This marks the 6th year for the cook-off but the first to hold it with the Downtown Buckeye Bash and allow for people's choice when selecting the winning chili. The combination of beer and chili was a real crowd pleaser.

Check out the traveling trophy and sample a bowl of the winning chili at Danny's Place for lunch or supper seven days a week.

On the night before the opening of the Great Darke County Fair, approximately 120 people came to watch Hoosiers in downtown Greenville for the final installment of the Flicks on 5th series for 2010. Although it was the smallest crowd seen for the series, the event accomplished bringing over 700 people to the downtown area for the three movies shown this summer.

The community is encouraged to make Third Thursdays a family night during the summer. Downtown restaurants near 5th Street will be open with summer specials for the whole family. Flicks on 5th Series Returns June 17th

The Third Thursdays of June, July and August, Main Street Greenville will provide a free movie on a two story inflatable screen on East 5th Street between S. Broadway and Walnut Street.

A poll for the first movie of the series was highlighted on DarkeJournal.com. The community voted for Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (Rated G; 100 minutes; 1971) to play on Thursday, June 17.

Movie trivia will begin at 8:15 pm with the movie starting approximately at 8:30 pm.

Knitting at the Market

Main Street Greenville and Woodsview Alpaca Farm are excited to present "The Knitting Circle at the Market." The last two Saturdays of each month (June-September) the Market will host knitting classes, demonstration and pleasure knitting from 12:00 pm-1:00 pm.

Knitting Class starts Saturday, June 19- learn how to knit a cotton washcloth. This will be a two Saturday project. Come back on Saturday, June 26 to finish the project. This project is $10 which includes all materials and supplies. Please pre-register for this event by emailing info@mainstreetgreenville.org or by coming to the market any Wednesday or Saturday to the Communal Table to sign up.

A Great Opening Day

The kickoff day to the 2010 Farmers' Market Season was awesome! The weather was even cooperative for the day's festivities. Jan Boyer and Isabelle Culbertson settled on the lawn for a morning of painting. Gil Miller entertained the market goers with his soft sweet lyrics and guitar.

We introduced the Market Pass for customers to earn a free market tote with the purchase of $25 at the market this month. Thank you Farm Credit Service for being a market partner for the Market Pass.

Our venders for Opening Day were Yappy Treats, Janet's Broadway Bakery, Josephine Candle Co., EAT Food For Life, Rhoadeside Noodles and More, Cindy Bright, Baby Bling, and the Communal Table.

Wednesday, June 9th Market from 2-6pm will have vendors Rhoadeside Noodles and More, Mandy Martin Herbs, Baby Bling, Yappy Treats and Janet's Broadway Bakery. A special demonstration "Put A Lid On It" ways to preserve your garden harvest by Diane Johnson will be from 3-5pm. Learn tips for canning, freezing and other best practices for food preservation.

Downtown Beautification Day Is Colorful!

On May 22, over 60 people from businesses, organizations and families came to beautify downtown. With the early morning start, volunteers from BASF assisted in the unloading and spreading of mulch on the downtown tree boxes. From 8:00am until 11:00am on a Saturday morning people inundated the downtown to plant their adopted box organized by the Main Street Greenville’s Design Committee.

If you are in downtown this summer, check out the colorful additions to the downtown along with the rows of street poles recognizing the Adopt-A-Box participants. Children, parents, grandparents, co-workers, and friends all took part in the planting of the vibrant colors along South Broadway. “This program was designed to reach out and involve the community and to have an appreciation for downtown Greenville,” stated Mike Henderson, Main Street Greenville Design Chair. Throughout the summer the participants will be maintaining their box while helpful hands of more community volunteers water the boxes and pots.

This year’s program recognizes Miller Flowers, Greenville Rotary Club, BASF, Spencer’s Landscaping, Fresh Air Farms, City of Greenville Street Department and the Greenville FFA for contributing time, materials and or monetary donation towards this community project.

Opening Day for Farmers' Market

The Farmers’ Market season is kicking off Saturday, June 5 at the Courthouse in downtown Greenville from 9:00am – 1:00pm. To welcome the fresh and local market season many activities are scheduled during opening day as well as throughout the market season.

Besides the awesome fresh produce, handmade products and homemade goodies, the market will be the stage for Sweet Surrender, a wholesome, family oriented music performer. Sweet Surrender’s founder, Gill Miller, will be performing at the Courthouse gazebo from 10:30 am-12:30 pm opening day and every first Saturday of the market season.

Another great addition to the market is Artists on the Lawn. Members of the Greenville Art Guild will be painting and displaying their talents for market goers. “We enjoy creating our art in the shadow of our historic Courthouse. The Farmers' Market scene with its patrons make great subjects for paintings,” commented Jan Boyer, President of the Greenville Art Guild. The Artists on the Lawn is a series at the market every Saturday until the end of July.

Vendors to expect at opening day include: EAT Food for Life, organic products; Woodview Alpaca Farm, alpaca yarn and products; Janet’s Broadway Bakery, baked goods; Yappy Treats, dog treats; Frank Dawson, organic produce, fruit and vegetables; Rhoadeside Noodles & More, angel food cakes and noodles; Baby Bling, handmade baby accessories; Josephine Candle Co., soy candles and handmade rugs.

The Downtown Greenville Farmers’ Market is every Saturday from June until the end of October as well as every Wednesday starting June 9 until the end of September from 2:00 – 6:00pm. Wednesday, June 9 market will offer a demonstration by Diane Johnson from 3:00 – 5:00pm called “Put A Lid On It,” how to preserve your vegetables and fruits. The market as well as the demonstration takes place at the Courthouse at the intersection of 4^th and Broadway in downtown Greenville. The Farmers’ Market is a free event for the entire Darke County community.

OLD IS THE NEW GREEN IN GREENVILLE

Our early downtown developers had a lot of insight in how to conserve resources and implement the modern term of “Green Practices”. The month of May is “Historic Preservation Month” and now, more than ever, many individuals are recognizing that some classic old buildings on existing sites are excellent opportunities not only for preservation measures but also to utilize green building practices. Have you ever considered the many green benefits that our historic buildings downtown have to offer? The re-use and modernization of existing structures can capitalize on the best use of old buildings because the foundations, footings and walls are already in place!

There is something natural about our historic buildings being in harmony with green practices. Consider that certain old buildings have features that create opportunities to help save energy. Many of the older structures have thick masonry walls like brick and stone which can help deflect exterior heat and control indoor temperatures. Most of the downtown buildings are attached to each other which reduces the amount of exterior wall space exposed to the elements. This thermal mass will help reduce the heat loss and gain. With taller ceilings found in older buildings, there is room to install under the floor efficient ductwork systems which are an added benefit. There are many large upper floor windows to let in natural light. To incorporate energy savings, storm window glazing can be added while preserving the aesthetics of the building. There are many opportunities inside and outside of our historic buildings to reduce energy costs and promote green building techniques. Some of these techniques include adding light reflective roof coverings to reduce heat gain or “heat island effects”. Low flow plumbing fixtures as well as flushless urinals can easily replace the older style plumbing fixtures to reduce and conserve water usage. Many of the upper floors of the older buildings already have in-place skylights which allow for good day lighting practices to be utilized. Installation of new technology energy efficient fluorescent and LED lighting fixtures can easily be introduced into older buildings.

An excellent example of energy and efficiency is the older style fan system found in the Palace at the corner of 5^th and Broadway. The operation of these fans allows air flow to be drawn down from above and eliminates the need for a drop ceiling. This allows the historic integrity and atmosphere of the building to remain. Some of the buildings downtown also have prism glass in the transom, which many are hidden beneath the front sign board locations. These glass prisms help refract more natural light into the building. Our early building designers knew this was a very good “day lighting” technique that today can help reduce energy usage. A good example of this type of glass prism can be found within the storefronts of the large former Masonic Lodge building adjoining the Public Square near the Post Office.

The United States Green Building Council (USGBC) is a non-profit community of leaders working to make green buildings available to everyone within a generation. Their green sustainable site design recommendations seek to protect undeveloped land, reuse/restore previously developed sites, reduce automobile use or promote alternative transportation, reduce heat island effect and provide stewardship of nature whereby farmland, wetlands and habitats for endangered species are preserved.

Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design or LEED is a leading edge system for certifying high performance buildings and sustainable neighborhoods. Recently, I along with four of my co-workers at Mote & Associates passed the LEED Green Associate examination and look forward to encouraging our clients to implement green design practices in their project designs.

Downtown buildings provide excellent community connectivity. Urban sprawl is reduced, green spaces are protected, and existing infrastructure is already in place that can be re-used. Sites with community connectivity typically are in walking distance of basic services.

Basic services are common services that people might use often. Some of these basic services include banks, churches, day care, the fire station, beauty salons, barber shops, library, post office, city and county government services, schools, restaurants, and community gathering spaces such as coffee houses and banquet centers. I am pleased that many of these basic services are still available in a three to four block radius of downtown Greenville. One is amazed at the number of people employed and the services available in such a compact area of the county.

Many of us that work in the downtown area benefit daily with having so many of these basic services located within close proximity of each other. Continued improvement of our downtown amenities, expansion of basic services, increasing our downtown residential living opportunities all contribute to a vibrant downtown. Being able to walk to many of these basic services also helps us cut down on our automobile fuel costs.

As past president of the Main Street Greenville Board and the current design Committee Chairperson, I encourage our young energetic entrepreneurs to check out the green building opportunities available within our historic downtown buildings…because old is the new green.

Main Street Greenville and Bear’s Mill are collaborating to bring historic preservation awareness to the Greenville and Darke County community. They have teamed up with local citizens that will join thousands of individuals and communities across the country to celebrate National Preservation Month this May. “Old is the New Green” is the theme of the month-long celebration sponsored by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. This month is an opportunity to appreciate our uniquely constructed built environment and local heritage.

In 1971 the National Trust for Historic Preservation created this spotlight on grassroots preservation efforts in America. Since then it has grown into an annual celebration observed by towns across the nation. Thousands of state and local community groups will honor their distinct histories with events that bring historic preservation to the forefront of Americans’ daily lives by emphasizing the vital importance of protecting our nation’s past. In Greenville, historic reservation is an effective tool for managing growth, revitalizing neighborhoods, fostering local pride, and maintaining community character while enhancing livability.

Historic preservation is relevant for Greenville citizens of all ages, all walks of life and all income levels. Main Street Greenville and Bear’s Mill feel it is especially important to celebrate the role of history in our lives and the contributions made by dedicated individuals in helping to preserve the tangible aspects of the heritage that has shaped our community. Please help us to recognize local historic preservation and participate in this special observance.

The air is getting colder the holidays are near. A time for celebration something we all hold dear. Join us for our downtown holiday traditions starting Thursday, November 19 with our storekeepers Holiday Open House and downtown Candlelight Church Stroll. Be inspired by the reason for the season and embrace the uniqueness of Greenville's culture with the Hometown Holiday Horse Parade on Saturday, November 21.
On Thursday, November 19, the nine downtown churches open their doors to the public for a Celebration. Roam the lighted streets of downtown or catch the free carriage rides that will be available during the Candlelight Church Stroll from 5-8 pm. Downtown storekeepers will have a festive holiday display unique to their business to signify the welcoming of the giving season and extended store hours.

The holiday spirit continues on Friday with music filling the downtown air as lighted garland glimmers on Broadway. Storekeepers welcome guests until 8 pm with holiday favorites to share. Amazing gifts are located right here in your downtown.

Everything's Coming Up (Not) Roses

Well, "something" is coming up, but it's not roses. It's Wave Petunias in Misty Lilac and Blue, as well as Pink and Yellow Lantana. On Saturday, May 16th, businesses, organizations and families came downtown to celebrate beautifying downtown Greenville. With a soggy start, Boy Scouts from Troop 373 began assisting in the unloading and spreading of soil and mulch in the pots and boxes that line Broadway. From 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. people assembled downtown to plant their adopted box or pot organized by the Main Street Greenville Adopt-A-Box Program. This program, similar to others across the nation, brings individuals to the core of the community to participate in maintaining one of Greenville's great assets, the historic downtown. It has allowed groups, businesses and families to "adopt" city right of way boxes or pots and maintain them by planting and weeding throughout the growing season.

Above, Bob and Sheryl Clingen of Canyon Country, California plant their adopted box. The Clingen's are visiting family in Darke County and participated in this years event. We will be recognizing an adoptee each month for their efforts in maintaining their box or pot.

Banners Yet Wave

If you travel through downtown Greenville on your way to school or work, it's possible that you have noticed the new spring street banners that are gracing the poles along Broadway. Not only do they shout "SPRING" they also exude creativity. It is my understanding that the newest banners were designed by art students at the Greenville Jr. High. What a wise use of our local resources, and at the same time encouraging and cultivating these young artists. I can't imagine the sense of accomplishment to see your own artwork displayed on the streets of your hometown. Kudos to these kids for getting involved in their communities endeavors, and hats off to Main Street Greenville for inspiring their creativity.

If you haven't noticed the new banners, well, what are you waiting for? It's time to put on your walking shoes, grab a cup of coffee or a smoothie and take a stroll on Broadway. The banners bring a lot of color and unity to the city streets and pull together the entire downtown area. They set the stage for all of the excitement that spring and summer are about to bring to our downtown area. May starts Historic Preservation Month. While you are getting your feet on the street to check out the banners, check out Main Street Greenville's Preservation Activities as well. Bring the family downtown and enjoy some art, some history and some culture. Who knows, some day it just might be your son or daughter's artwork gracing the downtown poles.

Local, Green, Fun- Downtown Farmers' Market

A long time staple of Downtown Greenville’s Farmers’ Market, Francis Byers, displays his award winning produce for market customers.

Do you raise vegetables? Sell crafts? Have syrup or honey to sell? Maybe you grow fresh flowers or prefer to sell baked goods? The Downtown Farmer’s Market is making plans for a late spring opening this year. Vendors are wanted!

As in the past, market days will be on Wednesday afternoons and Saturday mornings at the Courthouse lawn. This year the first Market will begin Wednesday, June 3, with hours from 2 – 6 PM. Saturdays are from 8 – 1 PM or both days are until sold out.

Vendors can choose from many options that work the best for your product availability. This year is an option for a ”communal” table. For those who have little or no time to sell at the market, drop off your produce, a volunteer will tend to the communal table. This allows you to sell your extra produce and make money. We have a designated market master to man the table the whole season.

Sponsored by Main Street Greenville and Darke County Farm Bureau, this is the 11th year for the Farmer’s Market. Products should be produced in Ohio or neighboring Indiana counties. A Blinding Romance

The second edition of Dining in the Darke has held on Feb. 13 at Montage Cafe in downtown Greenville. This experience was a little different than the first at The Bistro Off Broadway.

When the guests arrived we took each party individually to their own table as we introduced them to their surroundings. Observing this with my own eyes, this interaction allowed for a more private, romantic encounter that was still full of curiosity and amazement.

The menu created by Chef and Owner Aaron Cox and wife Michele consisted of a romaine lettuce salad with strawberries, red onion, walnuts, parmesan cheese tossed with a strawberry vinaigrette. The next course was a flavorful grilled chicken breast (everyone thought it was beef or pork!) on a bed of spinach fettuccine, topped with sun-dried tomato cream sauce & feta cheese. And for dessert Michele created a chocolate mousse with a "M" made out of chocolate fudge for garnish. The consistency of the fudge made everyone think it was carmel.

We at Main Street Greenville had a blast bringing this experience again to Darke County. We were thrilled to see people coming from one hour to two hours away to take in the experience as well. Stay tuned for a possible Dining in the Darke III!

Spoil your sweetie the day before Valentine's Day with an experience of sensitivity never experienced before, taking a journey of taste, sound and touch all while in the dark. In this age of information overload, visual stimulation has reached an all time high. But imagine that you cannot see, that you are abandoning vision in exchange for a new, more stimulating dining experience - this is "Dining in the Darke."

Guests are welcome to arrive at Montage Cafe in dowtown Greenville at 7 pm on Friday, February 13. They will be seated and given a uniquely constructed blindfold called a "Mindfold." Once everyone is in total "darkeness" they will be offered a drink from a select list of wine and beer. When the 3-course gourmet meal, a menu specially designed by Montage chef/owner Aaron Cox, is brought into the dining room, guests will enjoy an experience of taste, smell, touch and sound they will never forget. So that participants will truly need to use all senses other than sight to determine what it is they are eating, the menu will be revealed at the end of the dinner.

"The board members of Main Street Greenville are excited for the opportunity to bring such an out of the ordinary event to Darke County," says Amber Schmerge, Executive Director. "While doing research on dark dining, we found that it happens in major cities for up to three times the cost we're offering here in Greenville. We're looking forward to an interesting evening," she concluded. The ticket price of $40 a person includes two alcoholic beverages, dinner and dessert.

Snow, Snow, and More Snow!

Well here in western Ohio we have been hit with a gift from Mother Nature. Whether we see it as a gift or not is up to us. Kids see it as a gift for the fact that snow days are no school days. Others see it as a pain in the rear. But the shear beauty of snow really is something everyone should stop and enjoy.

In downtown Greenville, I am sure numerous downtown businesses are praying for the melting of 12" of powder to speed up. Eight foot mounds occupy every corner of downtown. The above picture however says it all. As long as a welcoming path hits your destination what does it matter how many feet of snow we have? Take the beauty of it in and have the attitude of sunny skies.

What's great about a downtown is that it is walkable. In the winter, if I don't have to drive I am happy. So downtown allows one to do that. Get things you need, take in the mounds of snow, help a neighbor and visit with others with the simple task of walking. Take winter as the time to mingle and uplift one another.

Soon the 8' mounds will melt away and sunny skies will be all we see, for everyone gets wrapped up in vacations, convertibles, and fairs that there is no time for simple conversation and mingling. What a gift snow is.

The sidewalk is always clear for those who wish to visit downtown.

As Christmas favorites are broadcasted on the sound system downtown, this cd of local talent is within the mix. Main Street Greenville is making this cd available to the public to enjoy. Historic Downtown Calendars

An 18-month calendar has been created by Main Street Greenville to showcase the historic integrity of downtown Greenville from 1890’s to the 1930’s. The calendar contains twenty historic photographs taken throughout the downtown district.

The calendar runs from January 2009 until June 2010 and can be purchased for $10 each at Readmore’s Hallmark, KitchenAid Experience, Granny’s Corner, Bread of Life, Bear’s Mill, Wayne Hospital Gift Shop, and the Brethren Retirement Gift Shop.

The proceeds from the sale of the calendar benefit Main Street Greenville’s Design Committee to further downtown improvements.

A Harvest of Happenings Lingering in the Amber Rays of Autumn

(A note from a family visiting Darke County...)

Towards the end of September, our family always try to squeeze in one more family fun event. So we head west to Darke County situated on the Ohio /Indiana border, where we find vibrant colors, intoxicating smells and

irresistible flavors. There's so much to sample on a perfect autumn weekend.

We begin our autumn explorations in Downtown Greenville , the heart of Darke County. All roads lead to this

county seat where Lady Justice proudly watches over the shoppers in the historic downtown area. This is a great walking town, so we park the car and stroll the tree-lined sidewalks enjoying the crisp fall air. The variety of

historic sites, shopping and seasonal events are enough to fill a weekend. I just love browsing the shops and wandering through the park dedicated to Annie Oakley, a local legend.

A favorite stop of ours in the downtown is the farmers market located on the courthouse lawn under Lady Justice's watchful eye. Our garden consisting mostly of tomatoes is abundant this year however we frequently purchase

other locally-grown produce to pair up with our tomatoes. The farmers aren't beginners like us. Many bring their children and grandchildren (or grandfathers) to help sell their wares. Farmer Byers is our favorite with

his blue-ribbon veggies. Mr. Byers is well into his mature years, and has many award-winning secrets still up his worn sleeves.

When it comes time to eat, we always have a hard time deciding from amongst the many of local eateries in Downtown Greenville. Several of them offer menus with ingredients grown on local farms so we can get the full harvest

experience.

Just a few blocks from the downtown area, over the river and through the woods is >Garst Museum . This is the one and

only museum in Darke County, so you can imagine how much good stuff is inside. The "must sees" according to our family are the Annie Oakley Center, Cross-roads of Destiny and the Lowell Thomas House. This last weekend in

September, the museum is also featuring a "Harvest of Quilts" that we are excited about seeing. Maybe grandma's old quilt will be on display.

While we are in town, our family takes a short drive along Water Street out Route 502 to Shawnee Prairie Preserve to enjoy Prairie Days . We always make time on this weekend to sample the hand-churned apple butter and locally-grown honey while enjoying the music and drama. The kids love to step back into history at the two-story log cabin to hear tales of days gone by and see the antique (ancient to them) furnishings. Costumed volunteers not only tell stories of

life in the late 1700's but also go about daily chores like candle-making, sewing and cooking.

On our way out of Greenville, we enjoy stopping at the Ohio Gourd Show at the Darke County Fairgrounds on Route 49. When this popular, annual event relocated to town several years ago, the thousands of first-time visitors

were amazed at the talent that went into decorating a gourd. Artists from all across the country and even the world come to this event to showcase their work. Our kids love trying their hands at decorating. Adults can take classes too. One highlight of the weekend is the musical concert performed with instruments made from gourds. And what's a trip to the Gourd Show without a souvenir? Let's see, we have a silver swan made from a gourd, an orange smiley face gourd, a Santa gourd for the Christmas tree... the kids can't wait to see what they'll walk away with this year.

From Greenville we drive east on Route 36 toward Bear's Mill situated on the Greenville Creek. This historic mill stills operates as it did when it was built by Gabriel Baer in 1849 with water-powered burr stones. Our family never gets tired of traversing the four story structure with the master of the mill or a costumed guide to hear the stories of how the mill was built and how it works. The ladies in our family also enjoy a leisurely walk along the mill race to see the many

animals frolicking about as well as the the brightly colored, hand-made pottery for sale as well as the art displays in the mill. The gentlemen, well they enjoy the locally-made fudge and cookies.

Leaving Bear's Mill, we travel the road named for the mill, Arcanum - Bears Mill Road south and stop at Brumbaugh Fruit & Fun Farm . Our kids know that a stop at Brumbaugh's just outside of the small village of Arcanum means warm fresh apple dumplings, cold apple slushies and a ride on the hay wagon. We usually ride along with the kids to the pumpkin patch to pick our future jack o-lanterns, and stop along the way to slide down monster mountain or get

lost in the corn maze. A bushel or just a peck of locally-grown apples always makes a great souvenir or a dozen apple fritters for the road!

While we are in Arcanum, we love to visit the various antique shops where we mine for treasure. When we need a break, a cup of joe or a fresh-made sandwich usually do the trick at Smith House Coffeehouse and Antiques.

With a variety of lodging options along the route in every price range, a fall getaway to Darke County , Ohio is affordable. Many prefer to stay in bed & breakfasts, where they can get to know the hosts and other travelers. It's a great way to get the inside scoop on local highlights off the beaten path. While others like the privacy of hotels and

inns, our family enjoys a dip in the pool whether it's at a b&b, hotel or inn.

Planning our trip each year is easy. We simply order a Visitors Guide online and sign up for email updates, so we don't miss anything new. Our annual fall trips to Darke County are something to look forward to and are never the same twice.

The Goonies wrapped up our Thursday Theater season last week. Downtown Greenville was the spot for 3 outdoor movies with a 2 story inflatable screen. Thank you to everyone that came out for the free movies...we hope you enjoyed it. We would love to hear from you...hint, hint!

With a great committee, a load of volunteers, fun movie equipment guys, a committed photographer, dedicated sponsors, a wacky emcee, and willing movie goers, I would like to think that this year was a great first attempt at bringing this free family fun event to downtown.

We look forward to continuing the outdoor venue next year (hopefully with dryer weather!)

Wow! It is only a day and a half into the sidewalk sales downtown. We have seen heavy traffic all day long. The first person in line at KitchenAid came at 11pm the night before to camp out in their car to line up as early as 3am.

The Model T convention is taking place a county away in Indiana. We have seen a lot of the nostalgic cars putt into downtown to take all the craziness in. They just had to make a stop at Maid Rite!

Well from what I have seen so far all I can say is "Legendary!"

The downtown Farmers' Market is a great addition to downtown activities in the summer. One of the great things I see about the market is families working together for a bountiful harvest of goods.

This past Saturday was a great market to partake in. We strive to offer a variety of vendors each Wednesday and Saturday along with customers that really enjoy the downtown setting.

Here are a few faces you will see at the market in downtown. (Remember market days are Wednesdays 2-6 pm, Saturdays 8 am-1 pm)

For those not interested in shopping all day, don't worry there is plenty to do downtown. A walking tour exhibits the life of Annie Oakley, which is displayed throughout downtown. The self guided tour can start and stop anywhere with 24 locations in storefront windows. The walking tour will be displayed starting Wednesday and ending on Sunday.

On Saturday from 8 am-1 pm our Farmers' Market will be open at the Courthouse on 4th Street. At the market you can find fresh fruits & vegetables, honey, pies, whole wheat breads, angel food cake, noodles, rolls, cookies, and much more.

Outdoor Movie Series, Season Finale

Have you been missing out on the summer fun happening in downtown Greenville? New this year, Main Street Greenville along with sponsors of Midmark Foundation and Greenville National Bank have brought free family fun movie nights to East Fifth Street called Thursday Theater, A Reel Outdoor Experience.

The season finale is nearing and we want to make sure you don't miss it. Thursday, August 7, The Goonies will be featured on the two story inflatable screen. The pre-show fun begins at 7:30pm with the Fratelli Scavenger Hunt downtown. At 8:00 pm KIDS band from DA Music Studio will perform with the movie beginning after sunset.

The Goonies are a group of seven young friends from a small Northwest town who find themselves on a thrilling underground adventure filled with humor and heart-pounding peril as they seek the secrets behind the treasure of the notorious pirate, One-Eyed Willie. This 1985 PG film features Sean Astin and Josh Brolin.
